       又到了畢業季,農藝術系畢業生今年將獲贈特別禮物,也就是自產的「台南16號」鹿鳴米。農藝系主任林彥蓉說,畢業季快到了,一般人送花、送娃娃當畢業禮物,臺大人是否可以別開生面送冠軍米,剛好由米屋企業陳肇浩總經理最近設計另一個具有臺大意象鹿鳴米的紙盒包裝(如附圖)。這是300公克的小包裝米,原本紙盒是大大的『16』,新設計的小提盒的包裝一面臺大農場的圖、另一面則是臺大校門的圖,而且又是自產優質米,因此送米給畢業生,意義非凡。
       台北都會區寸土寸金,要留有農地耕作相當不容易,但在台大校園內農業試驗場仍保有大片的農地,更是相當珍貴;台大農場表示,我國自古「以農立國」,現今由於全球氣候變遷對糧食的生產與供應造成明顯的威脅,作物科學的研究及發展成為全球關注的焦點。臺灣大學農藝系在這個關鍵的時刻、在這塊土地,發揮最大的影響力,培育作物科學研究及實際應用的人才,確保國人糧食安全及農產需求,致力全球農業環境之永續發展,引領新世代的農業發展。
      生物資源暨農學院院長盧虎生表示,本校農藝系的研究發展重點目標之一為配合分子育種技術開發各種耐逆境作物新品種,提高作物對於抗蟲性、抗病性、耐旱性、耐高溫等特性,以及容易以低肥料、低人力投入、節水等制度栽培,使臺灣邁向永續農業之國度。
因此,本校農藝系的師生與行政院農委會臺南區農業改良場一起合作朝向良質米的育成,改良場的陳榮坤副研究負責稻米的人工授粉、田間栽培管理,而本校農藝系林彥蓉教授和研究生陳正昇先生負責實驗室的工作,以基因型快篩的選拔方式,精確篩選具有重要農藝性狀的植株,在短短的5年半,僅是傳統育種所需的時間的一半,育成一個優良質米的水稻新品種,於是命名為「臺南16號」,是臺灣第一、也是目前唯一的一個以分子育種育成的作物品種。良質米稉稻「臺南16號」的米粒外觀晶瑩剔透,米飯富有光澤及彈性口感,極具有市場競爭力。
       本校追求學術上之卓越成就,亦對於技術轉移、創業輔導之開發不遺餘力。值此之際,為振興稻作產業,發展本校生農學院特色,並與產業接軌,因此,臺大農業試驗場以「臺南16號」為本生產臺大農場品牌米,並於臺大校園內的試驗農田與彰化二林種植臺南16號之優質米,與台南區農業改良場合作育成了一個優良米質的新品種,近幾年參加農委會優質米評比,年年得冠軍,「鹿鳴冠軍米」頓時成為農產品行銷之亮點。

Lu Ming Rice, the Gradution gift, for Graduates from Department of Agronomy
New package with NTU images was released


The graduation season is coming. This year, graduates from Department of Agronomy will receive a special gift, Lu Ming Rice (鹿鳴米), Tainan 16 with premium grain quality. Dr. LIN, Yann-rong (林彥蓉), the Chair of the Department of Agronomy, said that during graduation season, parents and friends usually give flowers or dolls as graduation gifts; BUT, how about giving something different, like Lu Ming Rice gift box with images of NTU. Lu Ming Rice was initially packed with a big "16" on its box. CHEN, Zhao-Hao (陳肇浩), the General Manager of Rice House, redesigned the package of gift box with the images of NTU Experimental Farm and the main gate of NTU. It is more meaningful to give these gift boxes to our graduates since Lu Ming Rice is self-produced with good quality.
 
The land price is so pricey in Taipei metropolis that only few farmlands are preserved. However, large areas of farmlands are preserved in Experimental Farm of NTU in the city center. The food production and supply have been severely threaten by the impacts of climate change; therefore, the research and development of crop science become vital issues. Department of Agronomy has been incubating talents for academic research and applications of crop science to ensure the food security and resilience and to meet the needs of agricultural production in Taiwan. Moreover, they have also been dedicating to the sustainable development of global agriculture and leading the agricultural development toward a new generation.
 
LUR, Huu-Sheng (盧虎生), the Dean of College of Bioresources and Agriculture, mentioned that one of the key research goals in the Department of Agronomy is to breed new crop varieties with resistances, such as resistancens to insect, disease, drought and heat stresses. Furthermore, researchers have tried to develop the sustainable agriculture in Taiwan by establishing cultivation systems with less fertilizers, human power, and water resources.
 
Professors and students of the Department of Agronomy collaborated with Tainan District Agricultural Research and Extension Station (TNDARS) to breed premium grain quality of rice. CHEN Rong-Kun (陳榮坤), an associate research fellow at TNDARS, is responsible for field cultivation and management of rice, and Prof. LIN, Yann-rong (林彥蓉) and CHEN, Cheng-hseng  (陳正昇), a graduate student of Department of Agronomy, conducted DNA genotyping in the lab. They successfully bred a new rice variety through marker-assisted selection in just five and half years.  This new variety was registered as "Tainan 16." which is the first and the only variety bred by using molecular breeding strategy in Taiwan. The rice grain of Tainan 16 is crystal clear in appearance, rich in luster, and tasted elastic, leading it rather competitive and popular in the rice market.
 
To revitalize rice industry and to develop the characteristics of College of Bioresources and Agriculture, NTU Experimental Farm markets Tainan 16 as Lu Ming Rice (鹿鳴米), an NTU brand of rice, and prompts it to farmers in Erlin, Changhua, to connect the agricultural industry in Taiwan. In recent years, Tainan 16 has constantly won championships in contests of high premium grain quality rice reviewed from the Council of Agriculture, as a result, Tainan 16 becomes the spotlight in the agricultural marketing.
